The TRANS-SAHARA project marked a significant milestone with the successful organisation of its first regional workshop, held from 8 to 9 July 2025 in Tunisia. Led by the National Institute for Research in Rural Engineering, Water, and Forestry (INRGREF), the event focused on introducing and contextualising the Water-Energy-Food Nexus (NEXUS-WEFE) approach within the framework of sustainable development and climate resilience.

The workshop brought together a diverse group of stakeholders from government institutions, academia, civil society, and local communities. Participants engaged in discussions aimed at fostering a shared understanding of the NEXUS-WEFE concept, which promotes integrated and cross-sectoral resource management. The approach recognises the interdependencies between water, energy, and food systems and seeks to balance competing demands through collaborative planning and decision-making.

Key outcomes of the workshop included:

  • A participatory mapping of stakeholders relevant to the NEXUS-WEFE approach in Tunisia.
  • The development of an initial engagement plan to ensure inclusive and sustained dialogue.
  • A field visit to local water infrastructure and resource management institutions, offering practical insights into existing challenges and opportunities.

By initiating this dialogue, the TRANS-SAHARA project is laying the groundwork for innovative, locally adapted solutions that address the complex realities of resource management in arid and semi-arid regions. The workshop also served as a platform to exchange national experiences and best practices, reinforcing the importance of integrated approaches in the face of climate change.
