From 10 to 11 July 2025, the TRANS-SAHARA project, coordinated by INRGREF, hosted its second regional workshop, this time focusing on the “Inventory of Agroforestry Techniques” across Tunisia. The event aimed to document and analyse the diversity of agroforestry systems practiced throughout the country, with a view to informing future project activities and promoting sustainable land use.
Agroforestry, which integrates trees with crops and/or livestock, is increasingly recognised as a key strategy for enhancing rural livelihoods, improving soil health, and increasing resilience to climate variability. The workshop provided a platform for researchers, practitioners, and local actors to share experiences, identify region-specific practices, and discuss the constraints and opportunities associated with different agroforestry systems.
Highlights of the workshop included:
- A participatory inventory exercise to catalogue agroforestry techniques in use across various regions.
- Stakeholder mapping to identify key actors and networks involved in agroforestry.
- The development of a communication and engagement plan to support knowledge exchange and capacity building.
The insights gathered during the workshop will serve as a foundation for designing context-sensitive interventions under the TRANS-SAHARA project. By promoting agroforestry as a holistic and adaptable land management system, the project aims to contribute to the sustainable development of rural areas while preserving natural resources and biodiversity.
