Expert Talks

The “Expert Talks” series is a curated collection of interviews and discussions with leading voices in agroforestry, sustainable land management, and climate resilience. Hosted under the framework of the TRANS-SAHARA project, these talks aim to foster dialogue, share practical knowledge, and highlight innovative approaches that support ecosystems and communities across arid and semi-arid regions.

Each episode features experts from diverse backgrounds—researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and local leaders—who bring valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities of working with nature to restore landscapes and improve livelihoods. Whether you’re a student, a professional, or simply curious about agroforestry and sustainability, this space is designed to inform, inspire, and connect.

New videos will be added regularly, so stay tuned and explore the growing library of expertise.

Expert Talks: Episode 10: Binding Science, Policy and Practice Gaps in Sustainable Land Management

Expert Talks | Episode 10: Binding Science, Policy and Practice Gaps in Sustainable Land Management

In this webinar, Professor Nigussie Haregeweyn Ayehu explores integrated approaches to tackling erosion-driven land degradation, highlighting how stronger connections between science, policy, and field-level implementation can support more effective and scalable sustainable land management solutions. Drawing on extensive experience in soil erosion, dryland ecosystems, and science–policy–practice integration, the session reflects his work across diverse socio-ecological contexts. Grounded in long-term collaborative research involving institutions in Japan and Ethiopia, particularly in the Upper Blue Nile Basin, the discussion shared key lessons and their broader relevance to sustainable land management challenges worldwide.

The session fostered an engaging exchange on how integrated approaches can strengthen climate resilience, improve land-use sustainability, and bridge gaps between knowledge and action to support long-term development outcomes.

Expert Talks: TRANS-SAHARA Expert Talks Series with Olivier Roupsard

Expert Talks Series | Episode 11: Advancing Climate-Resilient Agroforestry through Long-Term Research and Multi-Actor Approaches

In this episode of the Expert Talks Series, we welcome Olivier Roupsard, Coordinator of the GALILEO EU–AU Project, part of a Horizon Europe cluster advancing agroforestry for climate resilience in Africa alongside the TRANS-SAHARA Project and AfroGrow. Titled “From long-term bioclimatology and ecophysiology monitoring of agroforestry systems to implementing the EU-Horizon GALILEO proposal for Agroforestry, Africa, Climate Changes, centered on multi-actor approaches,” this talk explores how decades of research and monitoring of agroforestry systems are informing the implementation of the GALILEO project and supporting climate-resilient land-use strategies across Sub-Saharan Africa. Drawing on long-term field observations and interdisciplinary collaboration, the session highlights how multi-actor approaches, scientific evidence, and collaborative innovation contribute to strengthening agroforestry systems and enhancing adaptation to climate change in diverse African contexts. The discussion reflects on how stronger connections between research, policy, and on-the-ground implementation can help bridge knowledge-to-action gaps, supporting sustainable land management, improved climate resilience, and long-term development outcomes.
